The Political Invention of Fragile States - The Power of Ideas (Hardcover): Sonja Grimm, Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Olivier Nay The Political Invention of Fragile States - The Power of Ideas (Hardcover)
Sonja Grimm, Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Olivier Nay
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates the emergence, the dissemination and the reception of the notion of state fragility . It analyses the process of conceptualisation, examining how the fragile states concept was framed by policy makers to describe reality in accordance with their priorities in the fields of development and security. Contributors investigate the instrumental use of the state fragility label in the legitimisation of Western policy interventions in countries facing violence and profound poverty. They also emphasise the agency of actors on the receiving end, describing how the elites and governments in so-called fragile states have incorporated and reinterpreted the concept to fit their own political agendas. A first set of articles examines the role played by the World Bank, the OECD, the European Union and the G7+ in the transnational diffusion of the concept, which is understood as a critical element in the new discourse on international aid and security. A second set of papers employs three case studies (Sudan, Indonesia and Uganda) to explore the processes of appropriation, reinterpretation and the strategic use of the fragile state concept.

This book was originally published as a special issue of "Third World Quarterly.""

Narrative, Political Violence and Social Change (Hardcover): Josefin Graef, Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Raquel Da Silva Narrative, Political Violence and Social Change (Hardcover)
Josefin Graef, Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Raquel Da Silva
R3,984 Discovery Miles 39 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Narrative, Political Violence and Social Change is a call for engaging actively and critically with the ontological, epistemological, and methodological implications of narrative in the study of political violence and terrorism. Building on a basic framework of three modes of narrative - as lens, as data, and as tool - the chapters in this book demonstrate how the study of political violence and terrorism benefits from narrative inquiry as an interdisciplinary endeavour, in particular as regards diverging perceptions of social reality, the meanings of belonging, and the human drive for change. They showcase the substantial advances that scholars have made in this field to date and identify promising avenues for further research. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Studies in Conflict & Terrorism.

Semantics of Statebuilding - Language, meanings and sovereignty (Paperback): Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Nicholas Onuf, Vojin Rakic,... Semantics of Statebuilding - Language, meanings and sovereignty (Paperback)
Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Nicholas Onuf, Vojin Rakic, Petar Bojanic
R1,577 Discovery Miles 15 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume examines international statebuilding in terms of language and meanings, rather than focusing narrowly on current policy practices. After two decades of evolution towards more 'integrated,' 'multi-faceted' or, simply stated, more intrusive statebuilding and peacebuilding operations, a critical literature has slowly emerged on the economic, social and political impacts of these interventions. Scholars have started to analyse the 'unintended consequences' of peacebuilding missions, analysing all aspects of interventions. Central to the book is the understanding that language is both the most important tool for building anything of social significance, and the primary repository of meanings in any social setting. Hence, this volume exemplifies how the multiple realities of state, state fragility and statebuilding are being conceptualised in mainstream literature, by highlighting the repercussions this conceptualisation has on 'good practices' for statebuilding. Drawing together leading scholars in the field, this project provides a meeting point between constructivism in international relations and the critical perspective on liberal peacebuilding, shedding new light on the commonly accepted meanings and concepts underlying the international (or world) order, as well as the semantics of contemporary statebuilding practices. This book will be of much interest to students of statebuilding and intervention, war and conflict studies, security studies and international relations.

The Law and Practice of Peacekeeping - Foregrounding Human Rights (Hardcover): Rosa Freedman, Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Siobhan... The Law and Practice of Peacekeeping - Foregrounding Human Rights (Hardcover)
Rosa Freedman, Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Siobhan Wills
R2,954 Discovery Miles 29 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In an increasingly complex world, it is more crucial than ever to have a full picture of how international peacekeeping can be a force for good, but can also have potentially negative impacts on host communities. After thirteen years of presence in Haiti, the highly controversial United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti has now withdrawn. The UN's legacy in Haiti is not all negative, but it does include sexual scandals, the divisive use of force to 'clean up' difficult neighbourhoods as well as a cholera epidemic, brought inadvertently by Nepalese peacekeepers that killed more than 8,000 Haitians and infected more than 600,000. This book presents a unique multi-disciplinary analysis of the legacy of the mission for Haiti. It presents an innovative account of contemporary international peacekeeping law and practice, arguing for a new model of accountability, going beyond the outdated immunity mechanisms to foreground human rights.

Normalization in World Politics (Paperback): Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Gezim Visoka Normalization in World Politics (Paperback)
Nicolas Lemay-Hebert, Gezim Visoka
R976 Discovery Miles 9 760 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

As we face new challenges from climate change and the rise of populism in Western politics and beyond, there is little doubt that we are entering a new configuration of world politics. Driven by nostalgia for past certainties or fear of what is coming next, references to normalcy have been creeping into political discourse, with people either vying for a return to a past normalcy or coping with the new normal. This book traces main discourses and practices associated with normalcy in world politics. Visoka and Lemay-Hebert mostly focus on how dominant states and international organizations try to manage global affairs through imposing normalcy over fragile states, restoring normalcy over disaster-affected states, and accepting normalcy over suppressive states. They show how discourses and practices come together in constituting normalization interventions and how in turn they play in shaping the dynamics of continuity and change in world politics.
